Statutory Penalties for Non Compliance

A person who receives a summons for jury service and fails to answer the summons as directed by the summons, is subject to a contempt action that is punishable by a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $1,000. (Texas Gov't Code § 62.0141.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 3474 into law in late June, increasing jury pay from $6 to $20 for the first day of service, and raising jury pay from $40 to $58 per day for those impaneled to serve for a trial, beginning Sept. 1.

You may not serve as a juror if you have a pending charge for the commission of, or have been convicted in a state or federal court of, a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year unless your right to serve on a jury has been restored.

The questionnaire is used to determine your legal eligibility to serve as a juror for our court. The most important thing to know is that you must complete and submit the questionnaire within 10 days of your receipt.

Failure to answer questions shall be punishable with contempt of court. (K.S.A. 43-161). Regardless of your personal situation, all juror questionnaires must be completed and returned for processing.

There is no upper age limit. If you believe that you cannot serve for an age-related reason, contact your local Commissioner of Jurors Office to discuss possible accommodations or excusal. Your local Commissioner can also advise if any, or what type of, documentation is required for excusal.
