The experience of players like Harry Maguire, Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford could have made a difference for England at Euro 2024, says former Three Lions striker Wayne Rooney.

Defender Maguire was not selected by manager Gareth Southgate because of injury, while Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford and fellow forward Jack Grealish of Manchester City failed to make the final cut.

However, England have received criticism for some lacklustre performances in Germany, despite finishing top of their group with five points.

"When Gareth named the squad, 95% of fans, pundits and journalists were delighted with it," Rooney told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"I was one of the only ones who was a bit concerned with the lack of experience.

"People have been crying out for Gareth to leave Harry Maguire out of the squad, to leave certain players out of the squad and bring in players who are doing well for their clubs.

"But sometimes you need that experience. Grealish and Rashford haven't had the best of seasons but would they make a little bit of a difference?

"It shows the importance of experienced players and players who have done well for England in the past."

Starting Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo for England will go "against Southgate's instincts" says the Telegraph's chief football writer Sam Wallace.

The 19-year-old was brought on at half-time to replace Chelsea's Conor Gallagher in the Three Lions' final group game against Slovenia on Tuesday.

It was the second time Mainoo has been brought on as a substitute at Euro 2024 and he put in an assured display that has led to calls for him to start England's next match.

Despite only playing a half, Mainoo was second to defender Marc Guehi for possession won and joint third for total duels alongside striker Harry Kane.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, Wallace said: "What we have to remember about [Gareth] Southgate is he, by nature, is a cautious manager.

"So that second midfielder alongside [Declan] Rice is always going to be of a defensive mind. That is why he started with Trent Alexander-Arnold. That is why he then moved on to Conor Gallagher.

"He is gradually edging towards a more attacking player and Mainoo in his career will be more of a number eight.

"That goes against Southgate's instincts but I do think Mainoo's performance warranted a start."

Manchester United are interested in Paris St-Germain's Manuel Ugarte, with the Uruguay international among midfield targets being looked at.

The FA Cup winners are likely to need a replacement this summer for Brazil international Casemiro, who is expected to leave Old Trafford amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

No formal bids have yet been made for Ugarte and other options are being discussed as United look to extend manager Erik ten Hag's contract.

The French champions are believed to have interest from clubs across Europe, including one other English club, and are holding out for a substantial fee.

However, they are open to selling Ugarte despite signing him ahead of Chelsea in a £51m deal from Sporting Lisbon last summer.

Ugarte was a rotation option under manager Luis Enrique as PSG won a league and cup double while also reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

Debate continues over who England manager Gareth Southgate should name in his starting XI for England's final group match against Slovenia at Euro 2024.

A selection of BBC Sport pundits, along with chief football writer Phil McNulty, have picked their England teams for Tuesday's game.

Former Premier League midfielder Jermaine Jenas has called for Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo to get his first start of the tournament.

"On the ball, he has the quality we need to maintain possession and he also naturally wants to play on a different line to Declan Rice, which will give Rice more space to do what he does best." Jenas said of the teenager.

Joe McGrath and Gaz Drinkwater spoke about Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's recent media interviews in the latest episode of BBC Radio Manchester's The Devils' Advocate podcast.

McGrath said: "He's very good at taking criticism that's put to him in questions. When asked about Erik ten Hag, he was very good at giving him praise about being a good coach and having a good relationship with the players.

"It's not the first interview we've seen with Sir Jim, he's done about three or four. He's going to be quite a good voice for Manchester United."

Drinkwater added: "It's so weird hearing an owner talking about Manchester United. For the best part of 20 years we've had these blokes who I don't think even know that United play in red.

"It's very refreshing, these honest and open conversations we're getting are really nice to hear. There are things he's said that I slightly disagree with, but as long as there's honest and open conversations, I'm happy."

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is "not quite ready" to feature for England against Slovenia at Euro 2024 as he continues his recovery from injury.

Shaw has not played for club nor country since 18 February, but did train with his England colleagues on Monday.

Asked about the availability of his players for Tuesday's final group match, England manager Gareth Southgate said: "Luke's the only one that is not really available. He'll possibly change with the team but he's not quite ready to be involved in the game yet."

England manager Gareth Southgate has a few selection headaches going into the final group match against Slovenia on Tuesday.

The performance in Thursday's 1-1 draw with Denmark in the second group game was criticised and Southgate described Trent Alexander-Arnold playing in midfield as an "experiment".

Should he be left out, that would mean one of Conor Gallagher, who has featured in both games so far, Kobbie Mainoo or Adam Wharton coming into midfield as Southgate looks to improve the level of control his side has during matches.

Kieran Trippier, who has been filling in at left-back for the injured Luke Shaw, missed nine games towards the end of the Premier League season and has played more during the tournament than was initially planned.

Trippier was seen to be drinking pickle juice during the first group game against Serbia as he went down with cramp and there had been hope that Shaw would be fit enough to have featured by now.

Shaw has not been on the training pitch with his team-mates for the past two sessions and has been following an individual programme, but was back on the pitch on Monday.

If Trippier is to be rested for the final group game, BBC Sport understands there is a strong possibility that Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa could come into that position.

Joe Gomez has also played in that position for his club side Liverpool and has played there in the matches leading up to the tournament for England.

Manchester United and Liverpool have both made bids for Lille's Leny Yoro but the French defender, 18, wants to join Real Madrid. (Marca - in Spanish), external

Defending champions Argentina kicked off their Copa America campaign with a 2-0 win over Canada on Thursday night.

A number of Premier League stars featured in their line-up, Manchester City's Julian Alvarez opening the scoring from Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister's assist before Inter's Lautaro Martinez sealed the win late on.

Aston Villa's Emi Martinez kept a clean sheet with Cristian Romero of Tottenham and Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez in front of him.

Giovani Lo Celso also of Spurs came on for the last quarter but United's Alejandro Garnacho and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez remained unused.

As Denmark fans descended on Germany for Euro 2024, sporting viking hats and red wigs, there was one name that featured heavily on the backs of their shirts - Rasmus Hojlund.

The 21-year-old is set to spearhead the attack as the Danes take on England in their second group game on Thursday.

Seen as his country's rising star, the Manchester United forward signed from Atalanta for £72m last summer has the hopes of a nation riding on his shoulders.

But, despite showing glimpses of his threat in their 1-1 draw with Slovenia, he has now scored just once in his past nine international matches.

Before Denmark's opening group game, fans chanted Hojlund's name and cheered loudly when he was announced as part of the starting XI.

Slovenia fans had admitted concern at his goalscoring threat. "I would be worried too," Danish fan Morten joked.

But Hojlund was denied from close range by goalkeeper Jan Oblak in his biggest chance and came away having not scored in five matches for Denmark.

"Hojlund has been criticised a little bit too much," Brentford's Danish manager Thomas Frank told BBC Sport. "He is working hard and ending in the right positions so it is just a matter of time [until he scores]."

England fans will hope the time is not now for Hojlund, who continues to receive praise from team-mates and staff at Denmark.

Luke Shaw's injury situation always meant his inclusion in Gareth Southgate's England squad was a roll of the dice.

Shaw has not played since 18 February when he was substituted at half-time in Manchester United's 2-1 win at Luton Town.

Southgate confirmed at a news conference on Wednesday that the left-back will not face Denmark on Thursday.

"Luke won't be involved. He’s on track for what we thought originally," Southgate said.

"He needs a bit more work. There are days when he needs to do more than the rest and needs to recover.

"He's still in and out with the others and operating on his own programme as well."

England play their second group game of Euro 2024 against Denmark on Thursday (17:00 BST) and one of the questions around Gareth Southgate's selection is in the centre of midfield.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, used primarily at full-back by Liverpool, started in midfield alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in Sunday's 1-0 win over Serbia.

However, three Premier League legends would be keen to see Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo given an opportunity to start.

"There is still a question mark about Trent," former England midfielder Frank Lampard told BBC Sport. "I am a massive fan, but to come in at this level and play there when there are so many different elements of the game to understand is difficult.

"I would look at Kobbie Mainoo and getting him in. Some kids come along that just settle into the team.

"You need to be able to find the pass at the right time. He sees it and nothing fazes him."

Spain's 2010 World Cup winner Cesc Fabregas said: "Mainoo is so young and so unpredictable but he has this potential to play in-between the line. He's a special player.

"I would love to see England play more offensive and on the front foot, I think it's the perfect opportunity."

Ex-England and United captain Wayne Rooney is another in favour of Mainoo starting, adding: "I would play Mainoo before Trent in midfield, 100%.

"It's not that Trent can't play there. But I think to play in midfield you need that discipline, especially when you come up against the bigger teams, and [Alexander-Arnold] might get found out a little bit."
